Opps

I realized that I have not posted since last Wednesday.

Tristan was released on Thursday. He was a bit uncomfortable on Friday, but nothing that a little Tylenol didn't help. He's been eating, sleeping and most importantly: POOPING!!! (cheers all around).

He did have his first minor brush with fame though- A few months ago, one of the daughters of the Buffalo's Sabres head coach had a tumor on her brain- she came through the surgery with flying colors- all well, etc. The Ruff family (sans dad) came through the 9th floor giving out toys and visiting with patients.

another update

The NG tube is out (as of this morning). Still on room air O2. But was able to give Pedalyte via bottle and hopefully will be able to start real feeds later today. I do have to laugh, all this time in the hospital and it took me this long to find the public computers with internet access.

long night

Tristan had a rough night, the morphine and him did not agree and we wound up in ICU. He had one very scray apnea episode (as in 2 doctors and a boatload of nurses were working on him) but once they negated the morphine he started breathing better. He is now back in the "step down unit" and will be there for awhile. Not sure how long we're going to be here. On a sad note, Sr. Karen's body was found last night. She was killed by a resident at the halfway house she worked at. A sad end for someone who spent her life working for non violance.

update

After a bunch of x-rays, contrast studies and a CT scan they did exploratory surgery. It turns out that there was a kink in his intentines which caused the blockage. That has been fixed. They also did us a small favor and went ahead and took out his appendix. Right now he is in the step down unit (the unit between the PICU and regular surgical floor). *hopefully* he will begin pooping soon. There is still the 5% chance that scar tissue will form and cause issues. *BUT* with any luck, we won't be back for surgery until December when they reverse the ostomy. On a side note, I'm asking people to pray / keep in thoughts / ask higher power of their choice for Sister Karen Klimczak. My parents knew her and I had also met her. http://www.buffalonews.com/editorial/20060417/1031031.asp
Police searching for nun who founded Hope House By ANTHONY CARDINALE News Staff Reporter 4/17/2006
News file photo Sister Karen Klimczak, who works with former prison inmates, has been a leader in the local campaign to cut down on violence.
A search is under way for Sister Karen Klimczak, founder and director of Hope House, a residence for former prison inmates.

The 62-year-old member of the Sisters of St. Joseph was last seen Friday evening at Bissonette House, 335 Grider St., where she resides.

Hope House, which she founded in 1989, is at the same address.

Sister Karen is also a parish associate with SS. Columba & Brigid Church at Eagle and Hickory streets, where she had been working earlier Friday before returning to Bissonette House for the night.

"She was last seen on Friday evening around 9:45," said Sister Elizabeth Savage, president of the Sisters of St. Joseph. "She had been at church where people were decorating for Easter Sunday. She came home and people talked to her, and that's the last that she has been seen. We really have no more information."

Detectives of the Northeast District, who are handling the case, could not be reached on Sunday night. Anyone with information may reach them at 851-4416.

Sister Karen is 5 feet 6, weighs 120 pounds, and has short gray hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a T-shirt, jeans and sneakers.

Sister Elizabeth said she is unaware of any threats having been made against Sister Karen.

"We are just trying to be as confident as we can, and also being as realistic," she said. "Karen was certainly a woman of hope and woman of service, and a woman of nonviolence. The signs around the city - "Nonviolence Begins with Me' - came out of a program she started a couple years ago."

Hope House and the order were partners in creating and placing the signs, many of which have made their way as far as Albany.

"I know that Karen has a lot of support," she added, "and a lot of people are concerned and are praying for her."

Bishop Edward U. Kmiec of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo issued a statement on Sunday.

"We are praying that Sister Karen is safe and will soon be home," he said. "She is a woman of God who has selflessly given spiritual guidance and her time to many of those who have been cast off by society.

"On this Easter Sunday, the day of the Lord's resurrection, I ask that everyone in Western New York join me in praying for Sister Karen's safety. She remains in our thoughts along with her family, friends and the Sisters of St. Joseph."

back in hospital

Another intenstinal block. The explanation is that it happens. At least the doctors are honest that they aren't 100% sure (one of those they think its due to the ostomy)... there is a chance it will happen again (oh joy) or it might not. Nothing that we can really do to prevent it either. Well off to Wegmans to get food (since it's easter the cafeteria is closing early). We're taking stock of how many more holidays get to be spent in the hospital. (Thanksgiving- me trapped at Sisters, Christmas- him getting transferred to Children's for the surgery, Easter- back at childrens). But the Easter Bunny did come around the ER to say hi to the kids and gave out coloring books.

Hernias and bowels

Had to take Tristan to ER sunday. His hernia was causing major issues with his bowels (we had repair surgery already planned). Needless to say, they admitted him and did the surgery yesterday. The surgery took a bit longer since there was some cleanup that needed to be done (left over poop from when the perferation happened to his intenstine). He is doing fine- in fact he was more alert last night after surgery then in the day or so before he went in.

updates from ortho

Tristan is still having issues with his hips. The doctors were talking of surgery, but because of his ostomy, they don't want to risk it until it can be reversed (in December). Apparently they did not want to risk infection. So he is going to be in a brace hopefully that will help. They could not give him the usual brace for the hips due to his ostomy (the belt would have been right over his stoma) so he's in a medieval torture device (of sorts). I would post a picture of him in it, but he had a major poop blowout last night/ early this morning so I had to wash it (and still waiting for it to dry). In a way it is nice not having to deal with poopie diapers- but when the bag/ seal blows, it blows big time... Oxy Clean is an amazing product.

new weight

10 lbs, 11oz. as of yesterday at the peds- was a quick visit- for the RSV shot. Luckily that was the last one until October. Hopefully by May I can go out to more places then the Post Office, Walgreens and Dash's with him. We did have some nice weather at the end of last week so I was able to take him outside for a couple walks around the block.

We have an ortho appt today. Not sure what they are going to say- this is a follow up from his NICU days- since he outgrew the brace they made for him there.
